Glimpses from the Field
The textual fragments of the seventeenth century make little sense outside of the context of lived religious practice. Below are some excerpts from my recent work on Śaivism in practice: the performances we find here bear the unmistakable stamp of the religious transformations of the early modern period.
Photos below illustrate: 1) The Sacred Games of Śiva in Madurai, festivals instituted in the seventeenth century at Madurai's Mīnākṣī-Sundareśvara Temple and beyond. 2) The Ārādhanā (celebration of the anniversary of death) of Nīlakaṇṭha Dīkṣita, seventeenth-century Śaiva theologian and intellectual, as commemorated by his present-day descendants.
